5 sensory-friendly outings around Wollongong

Sep 28, 2025

Some days you need a big open beach and a packed picnic. Other days you need somewhere quiet, predictable, and easy to leave if things get overwhelming. Here are five low-stim outings around the Illawarra that our community keeps coming back to.

1. Towradgi Rock Pool early morning — arrive before 8am for calm water, gentle surroundings and far fewer people. The shallow pool is perfect for kids who find waves too much.

2. Wollongong Botanic Garden — the discovery garden has soft sensory plantings, shaded paths and benches every few metres. Free entry and a quiet café next door.

3. Bulli Tops lookouts — drive-up nature with sweeping views. Stay in the car if you need to, or stretch out at the grassed picnic areas.

4. Wollongong Art Gallery — free admission, soft lighting, and quiet rooms. Staff are welcoming of sensory needs and a calm space is available on request.

5. Killalea Reserve (The Farm) — a wide grassed reserve at Shellharbour with space to spread out, plus a calm beach down the path. Best on weekdays.

Tip: most of these are great early-morning or late-afternoon outings. Bring noise-cancelling headphones, a comfort item and a clear plan B — and remember, leaving early is always a win.
