Talking to your child about their NDIS plan

Sep 15, 2025

Your child's NDIS plan is, well, their plan. Bringing them into the conversation — at whatever level fits — builds confidence, self-advocacy and trust.

Start with goals, not paperwork. Ask what they'd like more of, less of, or want to try. Use pictures, choice boards or visual schedules if that's how they communicate best.

Translate the jargon. "Capacity building" becomes "learning new skills". "Core supports" becomes "day-to-day help". Keep a shared family glossary if it helps.

Bring them to the planning meeting if they'd like to come. Even 10 minutes of presence sends a powerful message: this is about you.

Celebrate the wins together. When a therapy goal is met or a new social group clicks, name it out loud. The plan isn't a chore — it's a tool for the life they want.
